Mapping for Nepal

Today we combined our lecture on Information Systems at University of São Paulo with an action to support the relief efforts in Kathmandu, Nepal that strive to cope with the tremendous consequences of the devastating Earthquake that took place last Saturday and was followed by several after shocks in the past couple of days. This was a coordinated action with disastermappers Heidelberg and the GIScience group of Heidelberg University, who organized simultaneous mapping events.

We have a longstanding friendship and collaboration with our colleagues of Kathmandu Living Labs, who are doing an inspiring work to coordinate on the ground the efforts of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team.

Our mapping event started with an guest talk by Wille Marcel, an experienced mapper of the Brazilian OSM community, to whom we are very grateful! Then we went on mapping for Nepal in OpenStreetMap.

We hope that these efforts will be of some use for the relief workers to help aliaviate the suffering of many affected people in Nepal.
